The Real Benghazi Scandal
When U.S. personnel were airlifted from Benghazi the night of the attack, there were seven Foreign Service and State Department officers and 23 CIA officers onboard. This fact alone indicates that the consulate was primarily diplomatic cover for an intelligence operation that was known to Libyan militia groups. The CIA failed to provide adequate security for Benghazi, and its clumsy tradecraft contributed to the tragic failure. On the night of the attack, the small CIA security team in Benghazi was slow to respond, relying on an untested Libyan intelligence organization to maintain security for U.S. personnel. After the attack, the long delay in debriefing evacuated personnel contributed to the confusing assessments. http://www.counterpunch.org/2013/05/15/the-real-benghazi-scandal/

Committing Treason and the Benghazi Murder Cover-Up
Take off your partisan hat and open your minds to the actual uninterrupted high treason that is part of the foreign policy establishment. Party politics is often just a show that plays to their respective bases. However, the tract and direction of extending the transnational empire just continues on a global scale. The full-blown treason committed by every administration that practices the internationalist vision of democracy domination is really a masquerade for worldwide dominion. Presidents are mere temporary talking heads for the oligarchy that actually rules. Murdering their own diplomats and hired help is incidental, when 1,455,590 Iraqi deaths since the U.S. invasion are ignored and dismissed. http://batr.org/reactionary/051213.html

The New Libya
This weekend, marking the second anniversary of the start of protests that would usher in a bloody and prolonged NATO-led coup to overthrow the Libyan Jamahiriya and Muammar Gaddafi, offers many reasons to celebrate for those whose intention was the demolition of Libyan self-determination, African integration, and a domestic system of extensive social welfare and stability. In return, Libyans have won the right to live in fear, as they have won the freedom to be ruled by countless armed despots each engaged in torture, abductions, and persecution of minorities. In spite of what seems like an unstoppable momentum towards greater strife and social disintegration, romantic imperialists in the West still insist on speaking in the most unwarranted terms of the “street revolution,” that has “brought freedom and hope to millions of people here” (Globe and Mail, 15/2/2013). In the warm glow of fires that consume others, some among us find reason for a warming self-congratulation. Symbolic of the depth of Western respect for Libya’s “new freedom” is this very statement, from the government of Canada itself, warning Canadian travelers: “Do not criticize the country, its leadership or religion. Harsh penalties may be imposed.” The few remaining pro-”revolution” propagandists in the West are not only unwilling to simply state that what they support is globalized regime change and a new colonizing wave that would make non-Western self-determination and sovereignty principles something to be wrecked and thrown aside, they are equally immune to irony. http://www.counterpunch.org/2013/02/19/the-new-libya-2/

Hunted: A First-Hand Account of Gaddafi’s Desperate Last Days
Gaddafi’s final days are detailed in a new report from Human Rights Watch, which painstakingly reconstructs his movements — and those of the citizen militia that captured and executed him — over his final weeks. At many points, the story rests on the account of loyalist fighters who were with him and sometimes on the recollection of a single associate whose information is difficult or impossible to verify, but it is so far the most complete account we have of the final days of the “mad dog of the Middle East.” http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2012/10/17/hunted-a-first-hand-account-of-gaddafis-desperate-last-days/?print=1

Will Obama Strike Libya in Delayed Pre-Election War?
Speaking on conditions of anonymity, four administration officials have commented that they are actively seeking a target and readying strike forces and drones as retribution for the Sept 11 attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi. As AP reports, if the administration does find a target, officials say it still has to weigh whether the short-term payoff of exacting retribution on al-Qaida is worth the risk that such strikes could elevate the group’s profile in the region, alienate governments the U.S. needs to fight the group in the future and do little to slow the growing terror threat in North Africa. http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2012-10-16/will-obama-strike-libya-delayed-pre-election-war

The Unraveling of Obama’s Foreign Policy
So dangerous is Benghazi, the New York Times reported Friday, FBI agents investigating the ambassador’s assassination have yet to venture into the city. Was U.S. intelligence oblivious to how dangerous Benghazi was when Stevens went in? Was not Benghazi’s reputation as a haven for Islamic jihadi known to us all before we “liberated” Libya? This is the city U.S. air power saved when Moammar Gadhafi’s forces were closing in. It now appears to be an al-Qaidaville where U.S. diplomats and agents dare not tread. http://www.wnd.com/2012/10/the-unraveling-of-obamas-foreign-policy/

Spinning Benghazi
Washington can’t seem to get their story straight: first we were told the attack on our Benghazi consulate and the murder of Ambassador Chris Stevens was the result of a spontaneous demonstration that got out of hand – and today we’re told it was all a plot initiated by a heretofore little-known “al Qaeda affiliate.” Before we get to the obvious question – which is it? – let’s linger awhile and wonder: why the sudden change in spin? This is important because in Washington, and the world of American politics, there is no reality: there’s just spin. People have opinions carefully tailored to the political demands of the moment – and during a presidential election year these change by the minute. http://original.antiwar.com/justin/2012/09/20/spinning-benghazi/

U.S.-Backed Terrorists Murder U.S. Ambassador in Libya
“I have met with these brave fighters, and they are not Al-Qaeda. To the contrary: They are Libyan patriots who want to liberate their nation. We should help them do it.” – neo-con loon Senator John McCain in Benghazi, Libya April 22, 2011. McCain’s “Libyan patriots” have now murdered US Ambassador John Christopher Stevens in the very city McCain spoke these words. An assault on the American consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi, the epicenter of not only last year’s violent subversion and destruction of sovereign Libya, but a decade’s old epicenter of global terrorism, left Ambassador Stevens dead along with two of his aides. http://campaign.r20.constantcontact.com/render?llr=o8b4necab&v=001-9B9G95DKurqati2PlRu4zW_utf8HpEGpo6N1BuPANkFa-0pvIgtZL4PtKvR_WibpILcDV30VKUwqIgNSP2_l66PpmqDttLG1F4E_Npndyg%3D

Blowback in Benghazi?
Initially hailed as a great triumph of Obamaite diplomacy and resolve, the Libyan “revolution” — managed in part by the departed Ambassador Stevens — subsumed radical elements under its broad tent. As critics of the US role pointed out at the time, these elements dominated the military wing of the “transitional” governing council, which was populated with Western-educated liberals who had no guns to back them up. The NATO-backed rebels took power and soon became the launching pad for Washington’s next regime-change project: the overthrow of Syria’s Bashar al-Assad and his Ba’ath Party. Libyan fighters were soon shooting up the streets of Damascus, and enjoying the hospitality of their Turkish allies just over the border. So far, so good — until the Benghazi collision with reality. http://original.antiwar.com/justin/2012/09/13/blowback-in-benghazi/

Getting ‘Gaddafied’
It’s a well-known fact that the Eskimos have 88 words for snow and Baskin-Robbins 57 varieties of ice cream – or is that Heinz Baked Beans? – anyway, my point is that certain subject areas of language are clearly overdeveloped and replete with vocabulary, while others are not. One of the areas less well served by language is politics and geopolitics, where multifaceted phenomenon of great complexity are described and explained using an impoverished vocabulary that does nothing to convey their essence. A case in point is the recent brutal murder of the US ambassador in Libya and his staff. Explaining that these unfortunates were killed by an angry Islamic mob incensed by a movie that the embassy had been pushing, and then quoting Hilary Clinton – “This was an attack by a small and savage group, not the people and government of Libya” – only shows the semantic shortcomings of the geopolitical narrative. Missing from the prim little network reports that brought this news to the uncomprehending public is the whiff of geopolitical naivety, the pong of inept deculturalization, and the stench of reckless destabilization that inevitably emanates from America’s dealings with the non-Jewish Middle East. But most of all these bare accounts miss the exquisite sense of karma that this action actualizes: a few short months after the USA brought about the lynching of the country’s previous leader, its own ambassador is killed in a remarkably similar fashion by the same nasty Islamic id that was unleashed and empowered on that occasion by USA foreign policy. http://www.alternativeright.com/main/blogs/exit-strategies/getting-gaddafied/

U.S. Ambassador to Libya is Martyr to Zionist Ambition

Stevens
Christopher Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya murdered earlier today was a martyr to Zionist attempts to draw the U.S. into war with Iran. The attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi was prompted by an insulting film made by Zionist Jews that depict the prophet Mohammed, and Muslims in general, as killers and perverts. This is taking place as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is ratcheting up pressure on the U.S. to attack Iran, or to support an Israeli attack. Christopher Steven’s fate is an object lesson for all Americans. Zionists are happy to see Americans die fulfilling Zionist goals. On Monday, we commemorated the 11th anniversary of the false flag attack on the World Trade Center, which has Zionist fingerprints all over it. http://www.henrymakow.com/us-ambassador-is-marty.html

National Public Radio reported this morning on shocking evidence of ethnic cleansing in Libya. After the war ended last year, and former dictator Muammar Qaddafi was killed, and the global media departed, the residents of the predominantly Arab town of Misrata slaughtered, tortured, and expelled residents of the neighboring, predominantly black town of Tawargha. The pretext was a bizarre, racist conspiracy theory: that all 30,000 black residents of Tawargha had risen up to rape the Arab women and girls of Misrata. http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Peace/2012/06/12/Ethnic-Cleansing-in-Post-Qaddafi-Libya

For interventionists in Congress to claim that the Libyan intervention “served us well” is absurd in the extreme–unless the “us” excludes entirely the Libyan people. Ongoing Atrocities by NATO-Installed Libyan Regime
The war crimes and abuses being perpetrated by the new regime further expose the claims that the NATO allies intervened for humanitarian purposes to rescue the Libyan people from violent repression. In fact, the atrocities flow directly from the predatory nature of the war, which installed the unelected TNC regime as a pliant government to control the country’s significant economic and geo-strategic resources. This is part of a wider drive to quell the “Arab Spring” uprisings and establish unchallenged hegemony over the Middle East, a drive now being continued against Syria and Iran. http://globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=29238

Gaddafi and the Brave New World
The removal of Gaddafi is limited in its strategic significance, but it is highly symbolic in other ways. Whether or not documentation of the ordeal was intended for public consumption, his rather gruesome demise illustrates graphically to every nation the cost of resistance to the Postmodern Empire. Enemies of Rome were once dragged through the city by the triumphator and jeered by throngs of plebeians before facing death. In our own age, the enemies of democracy and human rights are made to star in productions not unlike the horror-porn so fashionable among anaesthetized American moviegoers. When Gaddafi’s last cameo proved unbearable to watch for the non-depraved, U.S. President and Nobel Peace laureate Barack Obama set the record straight on a popular late-night comedy show. http://www.alternativeright.com/main/blogs/exit-strategies/this-is-sin/

Gadhafi’s Gold-Money Plan Would Have Devastated Dollar
It remains unclear exactly why or how the Gadhafi regime went from “a model” and an “important ally” to the next target for regime change in a period of just a few years. But after claims of “genocide” as the justification for NATO intervention were disputed by experts, several other theories have been floated. Oil, of course, has been mentioned frequently — Libya is Africa‘s largest oil producer. But one possible reason in particular for Gadhafi’s fall from grace has gained significant traction among analysts and segments of the non-Western media: central banking and the global monetary system. According to more than a few observers, Gadhafi’s plan to quit selling Libyan oil in U.S. dollars — demanding payment instead in gold-backed “dinars” (a single African currency made from gold) — was the real cause. The regime, sitting on massive amounts of gold, estimated at close to 150 tons, was also pushing other African and Middle Eastern governments to follow suit. http://thenewamerican.com/economy/markets-mainmenu-45/9743-gadhafis-gold-money-plan-would-have-devastated-dollar

Naked, Bloody Imperialism or ‘We Came, We Saw, He Died’
Among the many comments we have read and received on the alleged death of Gaddafi, the one most often repeated goes something like this: ‘Gaddafi was a brutal dictator who deserved what he got‘. The widely-held belief (at least in Western nations) that Gaddafi was a ‘brutal dictator’ is the result of over 30 years of (primarily) US, British and French propaganda against the former Libyan leader. The reasons for this long-running propaganda campaign are many, but chief among them is the fact that Gaddafi was not only fiercely independent as regards his native land, but he persistently sought to bring financial independence to other African nations. http://www.veteranstoday.com/2011/10/26/naked-bloody-imperialism-or-we-came-we-saw-he-died/

Qaddafi was, quite simply, a man who knew too much. Taken alive, he would have almost certainly have been handed over to the International Criminal Court (ICC), which had indicted him — along with his son, Saif al-Islam, and brother-in-law and military intelligence chief Abdullah Senussi (whereabouts unknown) — for crimes against humanity in late June. Imagine the stir he would have made in The Hague. There, along with any number of fantasies and false accusations, he would almost certainly have revealed the extent of his intimate relations with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and British Prime Minister Tony Blair, the details of his government’s collaboration with Western intelligence services in counterterrorism, with the European Union in limiting migration from Libyan shores, and in the granting of major contracts to big Western oil and construction firms. http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2011/10/24/the_man_who_knew_too_much

Libya: A Brutal, Gratuitous Slaying, the New World Order in All Its Transparent Barbarism
This is sickening, barbaric and worse than barbaric treatment and it’s in a long line of similar travesties. This is true with Slobodan Milosevic in Yugoslavia and Saddam Hussein in Iraq, with any leader of a country that doesn’t kow-tow entirely. I am not putting all these people in the same basket. Let’s rephrase that. Any leader whose time has come according to the United States and NATO can expect death. Hussein was hanged, Gaddafi was shot. Whereas Gaddafi was considered to be – he was only nominally so, but he was considered to be – the head of state and even the head of the military, and the bombing of his private residences under the guise of their being command and control centers suggests that he was considered by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to be in charge of the Libyan military, when he was captured on Thursday his treatment was governed by the Geneva Conventions, but instead he was shot through the head and murdered. This is the new regime that is being implanted in Libya, and for all the West’s talk of the rule of law and humanitarian concerns and so forth this is a graphic image of its true intentions, just like the death of Slobodan Milosevic in a veritable dungeon in the Netherlands because he was denied proper medical treatment in Russia, and the grotesque hanging of Saddam Hussein. http://weeklyintercept.blogspot.com/2011/10/global-research-by-rick-rozoff-how-are.html

War and Serfdom: Is This The World We Really Want to Live In?
Any peace-loving person who knows the real score of NATO’s Libya invasion must be incredibly disheartened. Libya, like everywhere else in the world, was not perfect. Yet, it was a shining example of an independent, prosperous, and secular country in Africa, and it was completely destroyed based on more establishment lies. And there was nothing anyone could have done to stop it. America and NATO countries claimed there was a “humanitarian crisis,” illegally seized Gaddafi’s international assets, and fraudulently sold a “no fly” zone to the United Nations. That no fly zone turned into arming radical Islamic rebels and carpet bombing heavily populated cities and critical infrastructure to remove or kill their popular leader Gaddafi [3]. Immoral war crimes all. And American children are supposed to cheer alongside the television about this “victory”? Worse yet, all of this was done without any authority by the people or independent oversight by their representatives. Congress was never given a chance to debate or vote on this military action and expenditure. The media was complicit as usual, selling establishment lies about humanitarian intervention to neuter the anti-war crowd. Now, surprise, surprise; NATO is carving up Libya’s vast resources into Western hands as they prepare for their next conquest. There seems to be no force capable of confronting this monster. http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article29514.htm

Gaddafi’s Dream Capital for Africa Pulverized by NATO

The swaggering architectural ambitions of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi never achieved the stylistic unity reached by Hitler in Berlin, but he had his dreams. And the most cherished of all his projects was to one day see his home town of Sirte turned into the shimmering, futuristic capital of a United Africa. Well, he lived just long enough to see it – over his shoulder for one last time as he fled on Thursday morning – transformed into a grotesque husk of a city with broken bits of what buildings still stood sticking out from the ground like the shattered remains of the teeth of a mugging victim. They are about personal privilege and power and exceptionalism, as the whole chosen people motif makes perfectly clear. I have long terms friends of all colors and creeds. It is why I don’t wholesale entire peoples for the crimes of their fellows. I actually catch a lot of shit for this because there are any numbers of people who want to convince me that every single Jew is a dangerous parasite. I haven’t had that experience. Some of them at the protests are well meaning, I am sure, but others are not. How an Empire Defines Victory
Seeing the end of the Gadhafi regime has somehow vindicated the war on Libya in many Americans’ minds, including some previously on the fence. This is a usual pattern: The U.S. goes to war, always with some lofty goal advertised, and the euphoria kicks in as soon as the regime is defeated. It happened throughout the 1990s. The Gulf War, Somalia, and Kosovo all present examples of the American empire claiming mighty victory even as the problems in each region that were cited as reasons to go to war — a brutal tyranny, starvation and warlordism, and ethnic violence — persisted long after the U.S. “won” these wars. It happened with the fall of the Taliban in October 2001. The Bush administration declared victory, the evil state was destroyed (or so we were told), and videos of little girls flying kites, signifying the defeat of fundamentalist theocracy in Afghanistan, saturated the press. Yet here we are, 10 years later, and the U.S. is still fighting the Taliban. Somewhere along the way it was forgotten that the war wasn’t simply supposed to achieve the limited victory of October 2001 — it was supposed to destroy the safe havens for “terror,” liberalize the nation, and neutralize the threat to America by attacking the root cause. None of this happened, not in 2001, 2002, or any year since. Do Americans, most of whom now want to leave Afghanistan, remember how they felt about the great triumph 10 years ago? Apparently, the lessons haven’t completely set in. http://original.antiwar.com/anthony-gregory/2011/09/11/how-an-empire-defines-victory/

First, Western countries not only launched air strikes and provided a large amount of weapons to the opposition forces but also sent ground troops to Libya. According to recent media reports, France, the United Kingdom and Italy had dispatched special forces to Libya to help the opposition troops finally win the ground war. Second, Western countries reportedly bought out almost all senior officials of the Qaddafi regime. In brief, Western countries planned and directed the opposition forces’ capture of Tripoli. However, the NATO’s victory in Libya is just a miserable victory. First, in order to reduce civilian casualties, the United Nations Security Council authorized NATO to establish a no-fly zone in Libya. However, the military operations of NATO have enlarged the civil war, led to tens of thousands of casualties of innocent civilians, made countless people homeless, and caused severe property damage and a huge humanitarian disaster. http://globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=26287

Libya: Obama’s Pyrrhic Victory
Can we expect a repeat in Libya, where – as in Iraq – a secular “socialist” authoritarian regime is overthrown, and the ostensibly secular elements of the opposition quickly go over to the Islamists? Such a question must surely have occurred to our all-wise policymakers in Washington: no doubt it was quickly brushed aside in order to facilitate the Obama administration’s harebrained scheme to hijack the “Arab Spring” and turn it into the engine of Western imperialism in the region. This seems to have “succeeded” only in the most superficial sense: the Egyptians are already at loggerheads with the Israelis, and it isn’t over in Bahrain – although perhaps giving Cairo something to worry about on Egypt’s Western frontier is Washington’s way of reducing pressure on its most important regional ally. (It works out that way, regardless of Washington’s intention.) As many have noted, we are facing yet another “Mission Accomplished!” moment, with a “victory” hailed, this time, by the more rabid Obama-ites. War fever blows particularly hot over at MSNBC, whose full-throated cheerleading is surely a major embarrassment for “progressives” who still cling to their anti-interventionist principles. Rachel Maddow declaring that war skeptics have been “proven wrong” by the apparent taking of Tripoli is like Jonah Goldberg hailing Iraqis “dancing for joy” at the “liberation” of their country by the U.S. You’ll have to dig way back in the Antiwar.com archives to find that one, but isn’t it downright weird how a Maddow can turn into a Goldberg? http://original.antiwar.com/justin/2011/08/23/libya-obamas-pyrrhic-victory/

Welcome to NATO’s New Colony, Libya
After 43 years of eccentric, zany, or comical rule, underscored by Western charges of terrorism, it appears the era of Libya’s Col. Muammar Gadaffi, once called by Ronald Reagan, “the mad dog of the Middle East,” is over. Col. Gadaffi has been the longest-ruling Arab leader. His sons, who were positioned to succeed him, are either captives or dead. Gadaffi’s absurd, opera-bouffe costumes, his busty, pistol-packing female bodyguards, his silly antics and claims to be Libya’s “Brother Guide,”(he held no official position), his efforts to lead the Arabs, then black Africa, and his support of all sorts of revolutionary/terrorist groups made the Libyan colonel into the Arab world’s most colorful and controversial leader. A score of attempts to kill Gadaffi have failed over the years. Israel, Egypt, the US, France, and Britain all sought to assassinate him. The US dropped a 2,000lb laser-guided bomb on his bedroom. It killed his two-year-old adopted daughter. British intelligence, MI6, tried to kill Gadaffi for supporting the Irish Republican Army by detonated a powerful car bomb in Benghazi, killing a large number of civilians. France’s intelligence service, SDECE, secreted an altitude-fused bomb on Gadaffi’s private jet. All these attempts failed. But now, it certainly looks as if Gadaffi has used up all his nine lives, and then some. http://lewrockwell.com/margolis/margolis254.html

Libya in Pictures: What the Mainstream Media Does Not Tell You
Massive rallies have been taking place almost weekly in Tripoli and other Libyan cities, including Sabha on July 8, 2011. Western public opinion has been misinformed. People in Europe and North America are not even aware that these mass rallies have taken place. The rallies express the Libyan people’s firm opposition to NATO’s “humanitarian” intervention (“on behalf of the Libyan people”). The large majority of the population are opposed to the Benghazi-based Transitional Council. The rallies also indicate significant popular support for Colonel Qaddafi in contrast to the usual stereotype descriptions of the Western media. The mainstream media has either casually dismissed the significance of these public gatherings directed against NATO intervention or has failed to even report them. http://globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=25630

A World Overwhelmed by Western Hypocrisy
Perhaps the height of lawlessness was attained when the Obama regime announced that it had a list of American citizens who would be assassinated without due process of law. One would think that if law any longer had any meaning in Western civilization, George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, indeed, the entire Bush/Cheney regime, as well as Tony Blair and Bush’s other co-conspirators, would be standing before the International Criminal Court. Yet it is Gadaffi for whom the International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants. Western powers are using the International Criminal Court, which is supposed to serve justice, for self-interested reasons that are unjust. What is Gadaffi’s crime? His crime is that he is attempting to prevent Libya from being overthrown by a US-supported, and perhaps organized, armed uprising in Eastern Libya that is being used to evict China from its oil investments in Eastern Libya. http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article28431.htm

Waging Another Unconstitutional War
The meticulous Harvard Law Review editors should be rolling over in their footnotes. The recidivist violations of constitutional and statutory requirements by their celebrated predecessor at that journal – Barack Obama has reached Orwellian dimensions in the war against Libya. You see, the widespread daily bombing of Libya, the strict naval blockade of Muammar Gadhafi-controlled Libya, the destruction of Gadhafi’s family compound and tent encampment in the desert–killing his son and three grandchildren–and the deployment of special forces inside Libya is not a “War.” It is in the Obama White House’s evasive nomenclature just a “time-limited, scope-limited military action” Can you find that phrase in the Constitution? So, in the invidious tradition of George W. Bush and his indentured confessor, Justice Department lawyer, John Yoo, now comfortably ensconced on the law faculty of the University of California Berkeley, Mr. Obama is blithely claiming as authority for taking our country into another war “the inherent powers of the President under Article II of the Constitution.” This wouldn’t pass the laugh test by Jefferson, Madison, Franklin Mason or even Hamilton. James Madison believed placing the war-declaring power in the exclusive hands of Congress was the most significant achievement during the convention in Philadelphia that summer of 1787. Now that more than 90 days have passed since the president began bombing Libya, no one can seriously claim that the administration has complied with the clear requirements of the 1973 War Powers Resolution. In a remarkable act of chutzpah, the administration sent to Congress its response to the growing concern over its abuse of war powers. Its argument, in a nutshell, is that the War Powers Resolution is not relevant because US armed forces are not actually engaged in hostilities because Libya is so militarily weak it cannot fight back! This explanation would be laughable if not so horrific. The administration wants us to believe that there is no real violence because the victim cannot fight back? Imagine if this standard was applied to criminal law in the United States! I am sure Libyans on the receiving end of US and NATO bombs feel hostilities are quite definitely taking place. http://paul.house.gov/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1878:strange-definitions-of-war-and-peace&catid=62:texas-straight-talk&Itemid=69

Libya: The Bizarro War
Flying unopposed over Libyan airspace, NATO’s fighter planes bombed the residence of the Gadhafi family, killing his youngest son and three grandchildren. What a glorious victory for the defenders of innocent civilians! The NATO-crats, of course, deny targeting either Gadhafi or his family members: those much-touted high-tech weapons, with their “precision” targeting capabilities, seem to have had a very convenient breakdown. But at least one Republican Senator wasn’t fooled. Lindsey Graham had this to say: “I support what NATO did. I thought this was a good use of the mandate. This is the way to end this [conflict]. Thousands of people are subject to dying, the longer this takes. No one in the world is going to regret Gadhafi being replaced, however you do it. I want to thank NATO for expanding the scope of these operations.” “A good use of the mandate” – killing three grandsons of the Libyan dictator, all under the age of 12? And what about that “mandate,” which was proclaimed in the name of preventing civilian deaths in Libya’s civil war? Trying ‘Shock and Awe’ in Libya
Typically, this Washington debate is being framed as a series of choices for President Barack Obama and NATO: one, abandon the current campaign of air strikes and let Gaddafi prevail; two, continue the conflict at its current pace and accept a stalemate; or three, commit more military resources to “win.” The neoconservative-dominated opinion circles of Washington are almost unanimous in their determination to push Obama and NATO to adopt option three. It is a consensus not seen since almost all these same Serious People supported George W. Bush’s invasion of Iraq in 2003, which started off with the “shock and awe” bombing that was supposed to solve everything. Left out of today’s Libyan debate is any consideration of building on the African Union’s proposal for a ceasefire and a transition to democracy with Gaddafi on the sidelines. From Waco to Libya: 18 Years of Humanitarian Mass Murder
“The Davidian cult in Waco was dealt with by armored vehicles,” remarked Muammar Gaddafi in February, defending his own crackdowns in light of the U.S. government’s. April 19 marks eighteen years since the end of the Waco siege and exactly one month since Obama began bombing Libya. Now that the federal government is again shedding blood in the name of humanitarianism, we might reflect on how it obtains legitimacy for its most brazen acts of violence. Long ago, when governments slaughtered the enemy merely for being different and thus subhuman or for occupying desired territory, such crude rationales satisfied the states’ agents and subjects. The modern democratic state, however, employs more sophisticated propaganda when it burns, gasses, shoots, and bombs people including civilians. There is always the excuse of security: the targeted people pose a threat. When this argument seems tenuous, it is well complemented by that most insidious of pretenses: The killing is done for the good of others. It is an act of kindness. David Cameron’s Gift of War and Racism, to Them and Us
The Euro-American attack on Libya has nothing to do with protecting anyone; only the terminally naive believe such nonsense. It is the West’s response to popular uprisings in strategic, resource-rich regions of the world and the beginning of a war of attrition against the new imperial rival, China. President Barack Obama’s historical distinction is now guaranteed. He is America’s first black president to invade Africa. His assault on Libya is run by the US Africa Command, which was set up in 2007 to secure the continent’s lucrative natural resources from Africa’s impoverished people and the rapidly spreading commercial influence of China. Libya, along with Angola and Nigeria, is China’s principal source of oil. As American, British and French planes currently incinerate both “bad” and “good” Libyans, the evacuation of 30,000 Chinese workers is under way, perhaps permanently. Statements by western officials and media that a “deranged and criminal Colonel Gaddafi” is planning “genocide” against his own people still await evidence. This is reminiscent of fraudulent claims that required “humanitarian intervention” in Kosovo, the final dismemberment of Yugoslavia and the establishment of the biggest US military base in Europe. http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article27844.htm

A Vortex of Death and Wealth
Whatever the strategic — and humanitarian — considerations behind NATO/U.S. intervention in Libya, a larger force utterly indifferent to both, and seldom sufficiently newsworthy to merit mention, unites tyrant and rescuer and keeps the world tangled in an endless cycle of hellish violence far beyond the scope of the conflict that generates it. http://www.commondreams.org/view/2011/04/07-0

NATO Slams Libya Forces for Being Inconvenient to Bomb
Libya is geographically a very large nation, with more territory than Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam combined. At the same time, it is a comparatively compact nation, with the population clustered along the coast and mostly in major cities. This has left NATO in an awkward position in its efforts to bomb Gadhafian military forces engaged in combat, as with the two sides fighting over a handful of disputed cities, those forces are inevitably near large populations of civilians. Which has led to NATO charging that the military is deliberately using “human shields” in the war. http://news.antiwar.com/2011/04/06/war-in-cities-nato-slams-libya-forces-for-being-inconvenient-to-bomb/

Libya – The DC/NATO Agenda and the Next Great War
In the 1930s the US, Great Britain, and the Netherlands set a course for World War II in the Pacific by conspiring against Japan. The three governments seized Japan’s bank accounts in their countries that Japan used to pay for imports and cut Japan off from oil, rubber, tin, iron and other vital materials. Was Pearl Harbor, Japan’s response? Now Washington and its NATO puppets are employing the same strategy against China. Protests in Tunisia, Egypt, Bahrain, and Yemen arose from the people protesting against Washington’s tyrannical puppet governments. However, the protests against Gaddafi, who is not a Western puppet, appear to have been organized by the CIA in the eastern part of Libya where the oil is and where China has substantial energy investments. http://www.lewrockwell.com/roberts/roberts299.html

Libya And Obama’s Defense Of The ‘Rebel Uprising’
Over the past two weeks Libya has been subjected to the most brutal imperial air, sea and land assault in its modern history. Thousands of bombs and missiles, launched from American and European submarines, warships and fighter planes, are destroying Libyan military bases, airports, roads, ports, oil depots, artillery emplacements, tanks, armored carriers, planes and troop concentrations. Dozens of CIA and SAS special forces have been training, advising and mapping targets for the so-called Libyan ‘rebels’ engaged in a civil war against the Gaddafi government, its armed forces, popular militias and civilian supporters. Despite this massive military support and their imperial ‘allies’ total control of Libya’s sky and coastline, the ‘rebels’ have proven incapable of mobilizing village or town support and are in retreat after being confronted by the Libyan government’s highly motivated troops and village militias. http://theglobalrealm.com/2011/04/04/libya-and-obama%E2%80%99s-defense-of-the-%E2%80%98rebel-uprising%E2%80%99/

French Fraud Behind Libya War Drive

neo-con Bernard Henri-Lévy
The Libyan war has the French, of all people, in the forefront, with President Nicolas Sarkozy’s smug, self-satisfied face mugging for the camera as French fighter jets scream in the skies over Tripoli. The French, who sat out the Iraq war with haughty disdain, are now even more eager than the Americans to get into the thick of it: Sarkozy, in trouble at home, is hoping to distract critics from France’s ever-worsening domestic economic woes and his own party’s diminishing electoral prospects, with a good old-fashioned dollop of Napoleonic tonic. France – once again thrusting into North Africa in search of its former imperial glory! It’s enough to make one nostalgic for the Ugly American. If the insufferable Sarkozy isn’t enough to make you vow never to eat French fries again, then the man behind Sarkozy’s grandstanding, Bernard Henri-Lévy, the French “public intellectual” and renowned phony, will push you over the edge into outright Francophobia. http://original.antiwar.com/justin/2011/04/05/french-fraud-behind-libya-war-drive/

Al Qaeda: Pawns of CIA Insurrection from Libya to Yemen
After two weeks of imperialist attack, Libya is being mangled by Al Qaeda terrorists, civil war, NATO air raids, cruise missiles, Predator drones, and C-130 gunships – all made possible by the CIA-backed Al Qaeda rebels of Cyrenaica. US, British, French, and Dutch commandos have taken leadership of the rebel forces, and are arming them with modern weapons in flagrant violation of the arms embargo specified in UN Security Council resolution 1973. Al Qaeda is also stealing heavy weapons on its own, as the president of Chad has reported. The singing tomorrows of the fatuous US-UK color revolution rhetoric have dissolved, exposing the hideous reality of a brutal, cynical, imperialist drive to destroy the modern nation-state itself. http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article27819.htm

The Arab Awakening, Hijacked?
Western attempts to hijack the Arab Awakening are necessarily limited to those countries – few in number – where Washington isn’t allied with the local tyrant. From the steppes of Central Asia, where US-supported potentates sit atop a growing proportion of the world’s oil supply, to the mouth of the Mediterranean, the American eagle has sheltered dozens of emirs, kings, and presidents-for-life under its overstretched wings. If the US winds up trading Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Jordan, and some of the Gulf states for Libya and possibly Syria, that’s a net loss by any accounting. Hillary Clinton’s State Department, a prime mover behind this war, is determined to reverse this trend. The idea is to turn the crisis into an opportunity for the expansion of US influence, and give the empire a much-needed buttressing. The President, confronted with the full-bore self-righteousness of the “humanitarian” crowd on his left, and amid rising cries of “Who lost Libya?” on his right, realized he was politically boxed in, and retreated from the field. http://original.antiwar.com/justin/2011/04/03/the-arab-awakening-hijacked/

Libya and the Obama Cult
Of course Libya is crawling with CIA, as well as British, French, and Italian spooks, and what they’re gathering is a lot more than “intelligence”: they’re out there collecting potential “leaders” among the rebels, choosing up sides, determining who will go on the payroll and who will be quietly sidelined or eliminated. http://original.antiwar.com/justin/2011/03/31/libya-and-the-obama-cult/

Battling the Beast
It requites no great prescience to see that this will all end up badly. Qaddafi’s failure to collapse on schedule is prompting increasing pressure to start a ground war, since the NATO operation is, in terms of prestige, like the banks Obama has bailed out, Too Big to Fail. Libya will probably be balkanized. http://www.counterpunch.org/cockburn04012011.html

Jihad Hunters vs. the Neo-Cons
When David Horowitz starts throwing around the label “neoconservative” as if it were a four-letter word, you know a real schism is at hand. That’s because right-wing jihad hunters like Horowitz, Caroline Glick and others are reaching levels of near hysteria over the prospect of Islamic movements gaining political power in a post-revolution Middle East, particularly right now in Egypt. Sure, they believe everyone has the inalienable right to freedom, but not if they live on “hostile soil” or when it is not in America’s “core regional interests.” Under those circumstances, the despots and dictators—as long as they are pro-western and maintain vital security agreements with Israel—are always preferred. http://original.antiwar.com/vlahos/2011/03/28/jihad-hunters-vs-the-neocons/

Obama’s War
In ordering air and naval strikes on a country that neither threatened nor attacked the United States, did President Obama commit an impeachable act? So it would seem. For the framers of the Constitution were precise. The power to declare war is entrusted solely to Congress. From King William’s War to Queen Anne’s War to King George’s War to the Seven Years’ War, the colonists had had their fill of royal wars. To no principle were they more committed than that the power to declare war must be separate from the power to wage it. And Obama usurped that power. http://vdare.com/buchanan/110328_obamas_war.htm

Target Israel, Not Libya
On April 9, 1986, Ronald Reagan called Muammar el Gaddafi the “mad dog of the Middle East.” Today, after an imposed no-fly zone, war rages to remove him. For decades, he ruled despotically, punishing enemies, rewarding friends. His days may now be numbered. Washington won’t quit until he’s gone, no matter how many corpses it takes to achieve it. In fact, however, a far greater Middle East menace threatens the entire region, the Israeli war machine based in Jerusalem. Besides illegally occupying Palestine, brutalizing Palestinians daily, persecuting Israeli Arabs, threatening and attacking its neighbors, its longstanding plan calls for dividing and dominating the region. In fact, it’s nightmarish vision calls for partitioning Arab nations into small states – balkanizing them along ethnic and sectarian lines as Israeli satellites, controllable satraps. The idea is modeled after the Ottoman Empire’s Millet system under which local authorities governed confessional communities with separate ethnic identities. http://www.countercurrents.org/lendman260311.htm

U.S. — No Timeline for Libya War
There are no clearly defined goals, no exit strategy, no conceivable policy at all, beyond launching massive air strikes across the nation. Secretary of War Gates says the war will take more than weeks, but with America’s other two wars in their 9th and 10th years, respectively, one has to take the administration at its word when it talks about an open-ended war. http://news.antiwar.com/2011/03/23/us-no-timeline-for-libya-war/

Obama’s Foolish and Unconstitutional War
Yet, again, why are we bombing Libya? Gadhafi did not attack the West. He faced an uprising to dethrone him and rallied his troops to crush it, as any ruthless ruler would have done. We have no vital interest in who wins his civil war. Indeed, Gadhafi has asked of Obama, “If you found them taking over American cities by force of arms, what would you do?” Well, when the South fired on Fort Sumter, killing no one, Abraham Lincoln blockaded every Southern port, sent Gen. Sherman to burn Atlanta and pillage Georgia and South Carolina, and Gen. Sheridan to ravage the Shenandoah. He locked up editors and shut down legislatures and fought a four-year war of reconquest that killed 620,000 Americans—a few more than have died in Gadhafi’s four-week war. Good thing we didn’t have an “international community” back then. The Royal Navy would have been bombarding Lincoln’s America. http://vdare.com/buchanan/110322_obama_foolish_war.htm

Putin Joins Fierce Opposition to Libya ‘Crusade’
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Monday likened the UN Security Council resolution supporting military action in Libya to medieval calls for crusades. Mr. Putin, in the first major remarks from a Russian leader since a coalition of Western countries began air strikes in Libya, said that Moammar Gadhafi’s government fell short of democracy but added that did not justify military intervention. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/world/africa-mideast/putin-joins-fierce-opposition-to-libya-crusade/article1949529/

Libya and the Familiar Patterns of War
It is striking how wars — no matter how they’re packaged — ultimately breed the same patterns. With public opinion split or even against the war in Libya (at least for now) — and with questions naturally arising about why we’re intervening here to stop the violence but ignoring the growing violence from our good friends in Yemen, Bahrain and elsewhere — the administration obviously knows that some good, old-fashioned fear-mongering and unique demonization (Gadaffi is a Terrorist with “deadly mustard gas” who might attack us!!) can only help. Then there’s the fact that the same faction of war-loving-from-a-safe-distance “hawks” that took the lead in cheering for the attack on Iraq — neocons on the Right and their “liberal interventionist” counterparts in The New Republic/Brookings/Democratic Party officialdom world — are playing the same role here. http://www.commondreams.org/view/2011/03/19-6
