The current drumbeat in the media about Iran sounds suspiciously like what we once heard about Iraq. Iraq was depicted wrongly by nearly all the mainstream media as a threat to the United States and as complicit in 9/11, with hardly anyone challenging the assumptions that were being made to justify the war. We now know that much of the bogus information that was being fed to the Bush White House was produced in the Pentagon at Doug Feith’s Office of Special Plans. So what is Feith doing these days? Is he in jail because he lied to get the United States involved in a war, possibly to benefit Israel? No, he is a Senior Fellow at the Center for National Security Strategies at the Hudson Institute and he has just popped up as a co-author of a featured op-ed in the Washington Post called “Obama’s ‘nuclear zero’ rhetoric is dangerous.” The piece is co-authored by interesting bed fellows, even for Feith: Frank Gaffney, noted Islamophobe, and James Woolsey, former CIA Director who should be best known for his appearance on television within hours of 9/11 to claim that Saddam Hussein was behind the attack. Woolsey, Gaffney and Feith are all associated with the usual neocon “think tanks” (was there ever a more misleading expression?) and all check under their beds every night to make sure that Sharia Law has not crept into the room uninvited. Ex-CNN Reporter: I Received Orders to Manipulate News to Demonize Syria and Iran

Ex-CNN reporter Amber Lyon revealed that during her work for the channel she received orders to send false news and exclude some others which the U.S. administration did not favor with the aim to create a public opinion in favor of launching an aggression on Iran and Syria. Lyon was quoted by the Slovak main news website as saying that the mainstream U.S. media outlets intentionally work to create a propaganda against Iran to garner public opinion’s support for a military invasion against it. Robo-Reporters to Replace Mainstream Journalists?

The mainstream media is now so glib, unquestioning and intellectually castrated that robo-reporters could soon replace real journalists – without anyone noticing. Computer algorithms are already being used to manufacture news stories about earthquakes and other data-rich issues and this same process could soon be employed for sports games and eventually more complicated news stories – rendering many journalists obsolete. Human editors would probably still be needed to check stories before publication, but the actual process of writing articles could be handed over completely to artificially intelligent software programs. I was in a military courtroom at Fort Meade in Maryland on Thursday as Pfc. Bradley Manning admitted giving classified government documents to WikiLeaks. The hundreds of thousands of leaked documents exposed U.S. war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as government misconduct. A statement that Manning made to the court was a powerful and moving treatise on the importance of placing conscience above personal safety, the necessity of sacrificing careers and liberty for the public good, and the moral imperative of carrying out acts of defiance. Manning will surely pay with many years—perhaps his entire life—in prison. But we too will pay. The war against Bradley Manning is a war against us all. This trial is not simply the prosecution of a 25-year-old soldier who had the temerity to report to the outside world the indiscriminate slaughter, war crimes, torture and abuse that are carried out by our government and our occupation forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is a concerted effort by the security and surveillance state to extinguish what is left of a free press, one that has the constitutional right to expose crimes by those in power.
