Israel Seeks Support for Mubarak

Palestinians throw rocks at an Israeli tank

The Mideast Burns
When I wrote my latest book on the way America dominates the Mideast, I chose the title, American Raj, because this modern US imperium so closely resembled the famed Indian Raj – the way the British Empire ruled India. As I predicted in this book, and in a column last April, Egypt was headed for a major explosion. America’s Mideast Raj is now on fire. Whether it survives or not remains to be seen. One cannot escape a sense that we may be looking at a Mideast version of the 1989 uprisings across Eastern Europe that brought down its Communist regimes and then the Soviet Union. Americans should be uneasy seeing crowds of Egyptians pleading for freedom and justice watched over by US-supplied tanks. There are indeed certainly strong similarities between the old Soviet East Bloc and the spreading intifada across the police states of America’s Mideast Raj. http://www.lewrockwell.com/margolis/margolis225.html

Davos Elites Enjoys the Global Depression
Using a combination of a Hollywood press agent, Madison Avenue ad firm and a media business channel the CNBC cheerleaders, the Davos clan relishes in their ill-gotten privilege and influence. Genuine entrepreneurial business creation shares the wealth across a broad spectrum of contributors. Not so, with those who revere monopolies and use the tools of derivative financing as a means of cabal consolidation. The Tipping Point Has Passed: Sweeping Change is at Hand
In recent months, the open dialogue between tyranny and freedom has hit its crescendo in Europe and North Africa. America, the country of extremes, has yet to respond to its own brand of tyranny. The surveillance state is now entrenched; free speech is set to be eradicated; and the Internet kill switch has been placed in the White House, while it has been calmly announced that world is indeed run by “Globocrats,” but not a conspiracy. And yet we are aware of it en masse. The alternative media, talk radio, lone activists, card-carrying organization members, and Facebook virtual activists are all something new for the managers of society to deal with. This certainly has not been present in past closed totalitarian systems. The dialogue is becoming heated to a point where the elite controllers seem to be worried about what they might have overlooked in their desire to predict and control mass populations. So much so that they have engaged us, seemingly looking for a truce — or perhaps a bait and switch. http://www.activistpost.com/2011/01/tipping-point-has-passed-sweeping.html

Revolution is in the Air But U.S. Sticks to Same Old Script
Events in the Middle East are moving too fast for the Obama administration to think it can get away with Plan A and Plan B reaction strategies according to the regimes or leaders it wants to keep in and out of power. Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, left, shakes hands with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, as she arrives at the Presidential Palace in Sanaa, Yemen, Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011. (AP Photo/Hani Mohammed) Consider the response of the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, to Hezbollah tightening its grip on power in Lebanon this week – Washington might have to pull its funding worth hundreds of millions for Lebanon, her office warned. But as democracy demonstrators were confronted by thousands of baton-wielding policemen in the streets in Cairo, there was no mention of pulling the $US2 billion-plus cheque that Washington writes for the octogenarian President, Hosni Mubarak, each year. http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2011/01/28-8

The Revolutionary Wave
Our rulers can’t see the locomotive coming down the tracks, even though they’re standing right in its way: they still insist on the myth of “American exceptionalism,” which supposedly anoints us with a special destiny and gives us the right to order the world according to our uniquely acquired position of preeminence. Yet that preeminence is increasingly being called into question by the economic facts of reality – and our own refusal to get our financial house in order. Blinded by hubris, and the habit of authority, the political class in America is no different, in essence, from its counterparts in Tunisia and Egypt: corrupt, arrogant, and used to commanding obedience, the Best and the Brightest are prisoners of their own complacency. Unable to comprehend, or sympathize with, the plight of the world’s miserable masses, encased in a bubble where the worst crisis they have to personally face is a broken chair lift at Davos, these preening Louis XIVs and Marie Antoinettes are in for a rude shock. The nature of these populist revolts against authority will take on a different character according to where and when they occur, naturally enough: in Tunisia and Egypt, we see protests sparked by petty humiliations such as Mr. Bouazizi had to endure. In Greece and Great Britain, mass upsurges are the result of austerity budgets that cut ordinary people off at the knees while the banksters get bailed out. In America, we see the Tea Party rising against the tyranny of indebtedness and economic strangulation of the ordinary citizen – but this is just a prelude to the rising chorus of discontent and outright rebellion that will threaten American society in the years to come. The revolutionary wave now sweeping the world will not exempt America, in spite of the myth of “American exceptionalism.” http://original.antiwar.com/justin/2011/01/27/the-revolutionary-wave/

Renewing the Patriot Act While America Sleeps
The Patriot Act drove a stake through the heart of the Bill of Rights, violating at least six of the ten original amendments – the First, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Amendments – and possibly the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments, as well. The Patriot Act also redefined terrorism so broadly that many non-terrorist political activities such as protest marches, demonstrations and civil disobedience were considered potential terrorist acts, thereby rendering anyone desiring to engage in protected First Amendment expressive activities as suspects of the surveillance state. The Patriot Act justified broader domestic surveillance, the logic being that if government agents knew more about each American, they could distinguish the terrorists from law-abiding citizens – no doubt an earnest impulse shared by small-town police and federal agents alike. According to Washington Post reporter Robert O’Harrow, Jr., this was a fantasy that had “been brewing in the law enforcement world for a long time.” And 9/11 provided the government with the perfect excuse for conducting far-reaching surveillance and collecting mountains of information on even the most law-abiding citizen. http://www.lewrockwell.com/whitehead/whitehead25.1.html

Middle East: The Undoing of America’s Mendacious Foreign Policy
What we are seeing across the Arab world is not just the undoing of corrupt regimes. We are seeing the undoing of America’s entire foreign policy in that region. No wonder there must be deep misgiving in Washington over the recent turmoil in this key energy-producing region. For decades, US administrations have, through a cocktail of ignorance and arrogance, deluded themselves that they could get away with a mendacious contradiction. That contradiction is the espousal of democracy and peace in the Middle East while at the same time sponsoring regimes that act in every way to undermine any path to democracy and peace. And the vast majority of people in the Middle East see through this delusion. They are well aware that at the root of democratic change in the region is not just getting rid of internal corrupt rulers – it is the overthrow of Washington’s imperialist policy, which has long subjugated Arab countries to despotic rule. http://globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=22975

Sputnik Moment — or GM Moment?
For both the welfare state—the major entitlement programs, Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security—and the warfare state—the near $1 trillion we spend yearly on wars, 700 to 1,000 military bases in some 140 countries, foreign aid and the military industrial complex—have to be downsized. We cannot make good on all the promises our politicians have made, and we cannot defend in perpetuity all the countries we agreed to defend in the Cold War. And if this downsizing is not done by our leaders, the decisions will be forced upon us when China and our other creditors come to us to say: We have enough of your dollars. We don’t want any more. But if we must take them, we want a higher rate of interest to cover the higher risk of default. Rand Paul — End All Foreign Aid, Including to Israel
Pressed on CNN’s Situation Room about details on his budget cut plans, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) says end all foreign aid–and when pressed further says that includes to Israel. Paul touches on the lack of wisdom of funding both sides of an arms race in the Middle East, then hat-tips to Israel’s role as a fountain of peace and democracy in the Middle East, but concludes that, especially when we’re borrowing all the money from China, all foreign aid has to go. It’s an interesting dance, avoiding seeming critical of Israel (which he refused to do), yet still doing the one thing that people who get upset at those who are critical of Israel want the least out of a U.S. politician: cutting off U.S. support. http://reason.com/blog/2011/01/27/rand-paul-end-all-aid-to-israe

Abortion “Doctor” Kills Newborn Babies — with Scissors
A doctor has been accused of snapping the spinal cords of seven newborn babies with a pair of scissors in a ‘House of Horrors’ abortion clinic.
Philadelphia doctor Kermit Gosnell allegedly carried out the ‘barbaric’ killings with the help of nine employees – one of them a 15- year-old high school student who was encouraged to perform operations and administer anaesthesia.
Prosecutors claim the babies were murdered after they were born alive in illegal botched late-term abortions during the sixth, seventh or eighth months of pregnancy.
Gosnell, 69, was charged with murdering the babies and a 41-year-old mother who died after being accidentally overdosed with anaesthetics.

America Has Fewer Jobs Today than it Did at the Turn-of-the-Century
America’s jobs crisis began a decade ago. Long before the housing bubble burst and Wall Street melted down, something in our national job-creation machine went horribly wrong.
The years between the brief 2001 recession and the 2008 financial collapse gave us solid growth in our gross national product, soaring corporate profits, and a low unemployment rate—but job creation lagged stubbornly behind, more so than in any economic expansion since World War II.
The Great Recession wiped out what amounts to every U.S. job created in the 21st century. But even if the recession had never happened, if the economy had simply treaded water, the United States would have entered 2010 with 15 million fewer jobs than economists say it should have.

Sony Uses Copyright Law to Chill Speech, Intimidate Researchers
For years, EFF has been warning that the anti-circumvention provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act can be used to chill speech, particularly security research, because legitimate researchers will be afraid to publish their results lest they be accused of circumventing a technological protection measure. We’ve also been concerned that the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act could be abused to try to make alleged contract violations into crimes.
We’ve never been sorrier to be right. These two things are precisely what’s happening in Sony v. Hotz. If you have missed this one, Sony has sued several security researchers for publishing information about security holes in Sony’s PlayStation 3.

The Road to National Suicide
It is not often that one sees an entire nation marching in lockstep to go over a cliff into an abyss, but that is essentially what the United States is doing at the moment. Not only have there been strong hints from the Obama Administration that the US presence in Iraq and Afghanistan will go on into the dim future, but there is also no sign of any necessary course correction in other areas. Israel, backed by Washington, continues its reckless policies and may be cranking up for a new war against Lebanon and Syria with the ultimate objective of involving its American patron in fighting against Iran. Clearly President Obama is unwilling to take any risks by challenging existing policies. The plan, part of a monthly update Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb gives the Department of Education, was filed late Monday to provide insight into Bobb’s progress in his attempt to slash a $327 million deficit in the district to zero over the next several years. Under it, the district would slim down from 142 schools now to 72 during 2012-13.”

Feminist Advocate: “It Is Awful” to Prosecute Girl for Lie that Got Young Boy Arrested
In the news story printed below at the end of this post, a 15-year-old girl’s rape lie caused the boy she accused, who was just 16, to be arrested. Yet, according to the news story: “The decision to prosecute the girl, now 16, was criticised by anti-rape campaigners. Lisa Longstaff, of the campaign group Women Against Rape, said: ‘It is awful that a girl so young has been prosecuted in this way.’”
Read that again, and let it sink in. If the girl’s lie had its intended effect, the boy would have been tried as an adult and convicted of the extremely serious felony of rape. No one — no one — would have said “it’s awful” that a boy so young should be prosecuted.

Maine’s New Governor Reverses Half-a-Decade of ‘Sanctuary’ Nonsense

Paul LePage
AUGUSTA — In one of his first official acts, Gov. Paul LePage is issuing an order allowing officials in state agencies to question people with whom they come into contact about their immigration status, infuriating civil libertarians.
The Republican’s executive order today rescinds one that had been issued by his Democratic predecessor, John Baldacci, that barred state officials from asking about immigration status. A LePage spokesman says the governor wants to send the message that with scarce state resources, he’s putting Mainers first.

Multiculturalism Is Dead, So Where Do we Bury the Body
I’ll never forget a painting I saw at a West Berlin youth hostel in 1985. The background depicted bombed-out ruins, presumably Dresden after the Allied firestorm. In the foreground were two women, their backs to us as they faced the charred, blown-out buildings. One woman was starting to lift her arm in a Sieg Heil salute, while the other rushed to grab her arm and stop her.
What a weird image it was, mixing national pride with national defeat and national self-loathing.

On Real Respect for the Constitution
by Ron Paul. I am pleased that the Constitution has received a lot of attention in recent weeks, thanks to the tea party movement. The 112th Congress kicked off with a reading of the Constitution on the floor of the House. It goes without saying that Members of Congress should have read the Constitution many times, and should continue to study it. Citing the particular clause of the Constitution that authorizes newly introduced legislation is a reasonable suggestion, yet in reality it will do little to restrain unconstitutional growth of the federal government. We have had such rules in the past and no benefit came of it. The laws that are passed reflect the preferences and personal agendas of those in charge. For too long those agendas have expanded government at the expense of personal liberty, regardless of which political party was in charge. This expansion of government clearly violated the Constitution, yet it was always argued that this or that program somehow conformed to that “living” document. http://www.lewrockwell.com/paul/paul718.html

The Lesson of Laura Ingalls Wilder
We hear a lot about how if only men would “man up,” take the reins and stop acting like overgrown children, women would magically fall in line and reveal their inner sainthood, which is only kept corked in by those awful men all around them. This is a recent slant on the old myth of women’s inherent purity that has been floating around since the Romantics made a splash in Western thought and literature. For some time before the sexual revolution, men’s depravity was a given, and for the most part women did behave well and behave as ladies. Today, however, now that women’s liberation has been achieved through the economic and legal subjugation of men, it’s getting a lot harder to make a case for female purity and blamelessness. http://www.the-spearhead.com/2011/01/24/the-lesson-of-laura-ingalls-wilder/

‘The Complete Guide for Killing Gentiles’
Thus, we see that a religion and nation founded upon the depraved teachings of the Pharisees is not bringing forth the fruits of high-mindedness, tolerance, and peace in the way evangelicals have eagerly anticipated for more than a century. Instead, this apostate system, “Babylon the Great,” whose forebears tried to extirpate the infant church 2,000 years ago, produces the same bitter fruit: persecution. This persecution may manifest itself in Israel against Arabs or Messianic believers — or internationally through Jewish-created, Christian-persecuting ADL “anti-hate” laws. But make no mistake. Where Liberals Go to Feel Good
Barack Obama is another stock character in the cyclical political theater embraced by the liberal class. Act I is the burst of enthusiasm for a Democratic candidate who, through clever branding and public relations, appears finally to stand up for the interests of citizens rather than corporations. Act II is the flurry of euphoria and excitement. Act III begins with befuddled confusion and gnawing disappointment, humiliating appeals to the elected official to correct “mistakes,” and pleading with the officeholder to return to his or her true self. Act IV is the thunder and lightning scene. Liberals strut across the stage in faux moral outrage, delivering empty threats of vengeance. And then there is Act V. This act is the most pathetic. It is as much farce as tragedy. Reagan’s Centennial: Praise for State Power Over the Individual
Reagan established a woeful legacy. When he took office, the national debt stood at 1 trillion dollars. Over the last 30 years, the government has accumulated an additional 12 trillion dollars in debt. “If right this moment you went out and started spending one dollar every single second, it would take you more than 31,000 years to spend one trillion dollars,” writes The Economic Collapse. The U.S. debt is now 90 percent of the GDP, or Gross Domestic Product. Reagan was a tax-and-spender and promoter of big government from the get-go. “As governor of California and president of the United States, he enacted policies that, in the main, greatly expanded the role and size of government,” writes Anthony Gregory. “As governor, he oversaw the largest tax increase in Californian history. In the wake of the Tucson shootings, there has been a new call to “tone down” political rhetoric. Of course, much of the call to “civility” has come from the left – accompanied by hateful, uncivil rhetoric – which seeks to both politically exploit the situation as well as shut down its opposition. One of the loudest voices for “civility” comes from Jim Wallis and the Sojourners group, which seek to espouse a “Progressive Gospel” in which Christianity is melded with the Welfare State. After the shooting, Wallis wrote that it was “an attack on the soul of the nation,” which is nothing less than a declaration that the only Gospel is a political gospel. http://www.lewrockwell.com/anderson/anderson311.html

Pro-Lifers for Mass Murder
How many churches on the recent Sanctity of Human Life Sunday mentioned the right to life of countless numbers of Iraqis and Afghans who have been killed by American bombs and bullets in unjust wars instigated by the United States? How many churches mentioned the right to life of U.S. soldiers who have died in vain and for a lie in senseless foreign wars? If the pro-lifers in churches that observed Sanctity of Human Life Sunday care about innocent children then surely they mentioned children in Iraq and Afghanistan who have lost their parents because of the U.S. waging war on their countries, children born with birth defects due to the U.S. military using depleted uranium, and children in Iraq killed by brutal U.S. sanctions? Surely they mentioned the orphaned and emotionally scarred children of dead and injured U.S. soldiers? Although some churches may have mentioned these things, I suspect that the number is rather small or, in the case of most evangelical churches, very insignificant. And if it be argued that the churches that observed Sanctity of Human Life Sunday should be excused because the day is just about abortion then what about the rest of the year? Do not adults have the same right to life as unborn children? Do not foreigners who are not a threat to this country have the same right to life as American babies? A benefit of the growing Israeli influence on American politics, as I’ve mentioned before, is that brusque Israelis are less likely to disguise their inner thoughts to conform to the rules of politesse. Jeffrey Goldberg, national correspondent for The Atlantic, was born and bred in America. Yet, having enlisted in the Israeli Defense Force, he seems to have picked up some of the Jewish state’s characteristic frankness. So, while much of the rest of the MainStream Media was flailing about trying to concoct new rationalizations for their furious attempt to pin that Arizona psycho’s rampage on mass-market Republican spokespeople like Sarah Palin, Bill O’Reilly, and Glenn Beck, Goldberg cut to the chase. In Glenn Beck’s Jewish Problem (January 18, 2011), Goldberg simply accused Beck, the autodidactic Fox News talker, of anti-Semitism. Now, Beck might strike a neutral observer as wildly pro-Semitic. Money
Money is much more than just money — and it would be a big mistake to believe that money is “neutral.” No less than science, no less than technology or language, money cannot be neutral. Twenty-three centuries ago, Aristotle observed that “human need is insatiable.” Well, “insatiable” is the right word here; there is never enough of it. And yes, because there is never enough of it, there cannot be a surplus of it either. The desire for money is a desire that can never be satisfied because it feeds on itself. Any quantity of it whatsoever must be increased to the point that better must always mean more. The thing, of which one can always have more, one will never have enough of. That is the reason why ancient European religions continuously warned against the passion for money. http://www.theoccidentalobserver.net/2011/01/money/

A quick scan of the conference agenda and a little further reading shows that what The Politico and company mean by “dodging” immigration is that the conference was not solely dedicated to promoting amnesty and attacking the Republican Party for being racist because it supports some immigration enforcement. The Hispanic Leadership is a project of The American Action Network, a 527, and its non-profit wing The American Action Forum. The organizations were founded by McCain advisor Fred Malek. The American Action Network’s board boasts pro-amnesty former Senators Norm Coleman and Mel Martinez, along with neoconservatives like former Congressman Vin Weber. The non-profit wing the American Action Network is headed by Jeb Bush, along with many of his brother’s cabinet members, such as Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao and Homeland Security czar Tom Ridge—both of whom vigorously hyped Dubya’s amnesty bills. The only prominent Republican with a not entirely pro-amnesty record (though not particularly great one) is former Senator George Allen, who is hoping to reclaim his seat against Jim Webb in 2012. There was Nancy Pelosi, a longtime Sinophobe, hectoring the Chinese leader over his country’s human rights record – when her own country openly practices torture, spies on its own citizens, and has murdered hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians in a series of wars of “liberation. There was Paul Krugman, economist-in-chief of Bizarro World, explaining to us that Chinese subsidies which keep their exports affordable for US consumers are supposedly hurting us – when actually the opposite is the case. And there were the neocons over the Weekly Standard, pointing to the “boundless” military ambitions of the People’s Liberation Army and the alleged threat from Beijing – this from a magazine whose editor has proclaimed that the goal of US foreign policy ought to be “global hegemony”! Are these people deaf to their own absurd utterances? My guess is they just don’t care: after all, to whom are they answerable? If Graham is correct, it wouldn’t be surprising if Schumer was not alone among high-level Jews in the American government whose actions benefited the financial sector — an area where it is widely acknowledged that Jews predominate — at the expense of the American economy as a whole. http://www.theoccidentalobserver.net/2011/01/the-smell-of-money/#more-6261

Martin Luther King Voted for Barry Goldwater!
That’s what $arah Palin, Glenn Beck, William Bennett and a whole bunch of other conservatives would have you believe. They tell us that King stood for freedom, liberty and limited government. http://www.thepoliticalcesspool.org/jamesedwards/2011/01/20/martin-luther-king-voted-for-barry-goldwater/

The U.S. and China Going In Opposite Directions
Whether it is the Obama Administration or any other we expect the change in attitude towards China by the U.S. as being one where both seek mutually beneficial policies. Despite the change in the fortunes of the two nations, there will be a desire to quietly adjust to the situation by both sides. And these adjustments will be huge. Just as Britain in the last century started as the number one world power and had to slip well down the ranks, so the U.S. will see the beginning of a similar process in the next couple of years. The greatest change in that process will be the shrinkage of the use of the U.S. dollar as the use of the yuan grows rapidly. http://www.gold-eagle.com/editorials_08/phillips011911.html
